Can we just talk about this finally, finally being said by Sam. We always hear Dean saying throughout the seasons how Sam has let him down and disappointed him. And they’ll fight or something…but then they move on. But this fucking scene shows us that Sam never forgot any of those times Dean told him that. He has never forgiven himself for ‘letting Dean down’ and every time Dean reminds him of that, he just takes it all in and silently accepts his utter failure of the big brother who has always been there for him.
We always knew about Dean’s feelings of letting others down, but now we finally see Sam’s too. It may seem unexpected at first, but this has not only been building up this entire season (the ghost possession fight scene, the Benny-related fight scene, the ‘did you look for me?’ scene…), but has been building up for the entire show. This is a common theme of Dean blaming Sam (even for ‘losing’ his soul!) and this scene has showed us finally just how much it has gotten to his little brother.
And even the part where he mentions “turning to another angel” instead of him… I knew he felt like he was being replaced by Benny, but Cas? I never thought of it that way. Of course Sam and Dean both love and need Cas, but I guess I never realized that it would seem to Sam like Dean didn’t need him as much anymore because he had Cas now too. I mean we’ve even seen throughout the show how Dean loosened up around Cas around the same time he pulled away from Sam in season 5 after Sam raised Lucifer. We even hear him say how he laughed more with Cas than he had in a long time.
And it just makes me think of the alternate story (before the writer’s strike) where Sam saved Dean from Hell instead of Cas. All this time Sam has probably felt as if he failed Dean by not saving him from Hell, since an angel had to be brought into the picture because Sam wasn’t enough. Was never enough for Dean… even though he is, no matter what Dean says. Dean may have pitted Benny against Sam as a brother, and he may need Cas, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t need Sam. It doesn’t mean he has ever loved someone more than Sam. No matter what Sam does, he has always been and always will be his brother.
